Soundedit ‘20 – Marc Almond

He has already performed at the Festival in 2013. Wytwórnia Club experienced a real siege, and the fans – as in the old, supposedly better times – even wanted to get in the car the singer was travelling in. The artist, at the request of his admirers, will return to Łódź. There is another good reason – a new record.

Marc Almond will perform in Łódź on 24th October (Saturday) at Wytwórnia Club. His concert will be preceded by the “Man with a Golden Ear” awards ceremony. The vocalist will visit Łódź promoting his latest album “Chaos and a Dancing Star”, which was released on 31 January. The release was preceded by the single “Slow Burn Love”.

“I wanted to write romantic apocalyptic love song, and this inspired me to write a couple of songs with a touch of paganism and hopelessness… The album reflects the out-of-kilter world in which we find ourselves living today. Crows are a symbolic recurring theme. When their eyes turn blue their life is coming to an end. Maybe it is the end of days for all of us, and perhaps this is something we should acknowledge.”, Marc Almond says of the album.

The artist is a truly legendary English songwriter and composer. In his 40 years of musical career, he has sold over 30 million records. By forming the Soft Cell duo with David Ball, he became an icon of synthpop and new wave. Their biggest success was the hit “Tainted Love”, which reigned for two weeks at the top of the official UK charts and spent 43 weeks in the prestigious Billboard Hot 100. The single also won the BRIT Award for the Best British Single.

In 2018, Soft Cell celebrated its 40th anniversary. The anthology “Keychains & Snowstorms: The Soft Cell Story” was released. The duo performed for the last time in their career in September 2018 in London. The concert was completely sold out.

Almond is a very colourful character. A native of Southport (North England), Marc worked as a teenager as a singer in a theatre and a carnival. During his studies he already tried to combine his artistic fascinations: pop with cabaret, film with experimental music. During one of his trips to London, he met David Ball, with whom he founded Soft Cell in 1979. Since then, popular music has never been the same.

The artist’s solo career includes over twenty albums, countless shows and working out his own unique style. Marc also made such a risky decision as living in Moscow, where he created the project “Heart on Snow” with Russian musician Andrei Samsonov. The music that they created are works dedicated to the Russian people, inspired by folklore and gypsy romances. The Moscow press called Almond “the adopted son of Russia”.

His return to London and performances at the famous Almeida Theatre gained extremely flattering reviews. It was a real renaissance for Almond, which was interrupted by a serious motorcycle accident. It took him more than a year to learn how sing again and regain his confidence.

Over the years, he has accumulated an impressive portfolio of musical collaborators: Tony Visconti, Gloria Jones, Dusty Springfield, Nick Cave, Siouxsie, Nico, Jools Holland, Bronski Beat, Rosenstolz, John Cale, David Johannson, Kelli Ali, Current 93, Coil, PsychicTV, Antony and the Johnsons, Baby Dee, Little Annie, Matt Johnson, Jim “Foetus” Thirlwell, Ferry Corsten, Ian Anderson or the icons of the 1960s: Gene Pitney and PJ Proby. Marc’s records were and still are very popular, he has also released two autobiographies and three books of poetry. Almond also boasts many industry awards. He also established his own company, mainly producing music for films and performances. Despite so many activities, the vocalist never fell into a routine. His work combines seemingly distant styles. It always contains elements of continuous searching and non-fulfilment.

“The Soundedit Festival has been functioning perfectly for twelve years, mainly thanks to the support of our media and technological partners, and co-organisers. We are very satisfied that owing to an agreement with Łódzkie Centrum Wydarzeń, Soundedit has a guaranteed stable development for the next three years” – says Maciej Werk, Festival Director.
